In the first quarter, China's log imports shrank by 10.6%! Under the heavy pressure of tariffs and soaring costs! The "value" of some types of timber has skyrocketed!
According to the statistics of the General Administration of Customs of China, the import volume of logs in the first quarter of 2025 plunged like a roller coaster. From January to March, the import volume of logs and sawn timber in China was only 13.906 million cubic meters, a year-on-year sharp decline of 10.6%! Among them, the import volume in March alone was 5.455 million cubic meters, a year-on-year decrease of 9.31%, and the import value was 7.89 billion yuan, a year-on-year evaporation of 11.48%, continuing the downward trend of both quantity and price from January to February (the import volume from January to February decreased by 11.4%, and the value decreased by 8.1%). Previously, the import costs of main construction timber species such as North American pine and European spruce had significantly increased due to the tariffs imposed by Europe and the United States in 2024, resulting in a cliff-like drop in the import volume of coniferous wood in the first quarter of 2025. With the tariffs imposed on North American pine, each piece of wood has effectively "put on a golden coat" on the spot. The tariff on European spruce is approaching 15%, turning the wood into a light luxury product in an instant. Now that the United States has wielded the tariff stick, China has banned the import of logs from the United States. Although the import of sawn timber from the United States has not been prohibited, under the extremely high tariffs, in terms of the result, it is no different from a ban. With the superimposition of tariff costs and logistics restrictions, the landed prices of some imported timber have soared year-on-year. In the long run, the domestic import pattern will surely be further adjusted. However, against this background, the price advantage of local pine is clearly visible, and everyone can appropriately adjust their purchasing strategies.
